Few posters of the war years rely on a flower as heavily as this one, with the forget-me-not serving as a plea on behalf of Belgium's children. Issued in Washington by the publicity department of the Belgian Military Mission and dated about 1917, it appealed to American donors after German forces occupied Belgium in 1914. Food and supplies were scarce under the occupation, and the Commission for Relief in Belgium, led by Herbert Hoover, worked to bring in aid. The poster shows how wartime fundraising blended sentiment with a direct request for money.
