Its title sets the terms of the contest: an election storm sweeping the land, with Bavarian white-and-blue set against Russian red. The Bayerische Volkspartei, the Catholic conservative party with strong support in rural Bavaria, sponsored this 1919 lithograph in the unsettled months after the war. Munich had recently endured a short-lived revolutionary council government and its violent suppression, and the poster links socialism to Bolshevik Russia, a framing that spread widely in German politics after 1917. It is a clear example of the anti-communist campaign art of the period.
