Few posters from Germany's postwar years state their case as bluntly as this one, which turns Bolshevism into a coiling snake and warns that it brings war, ruin, hunger and death. Dated 1919, it appeared amid the turmoil after the armistice, when the Spartacist uprising in Berlin had just been crushed and many Germans feared that revolution would finish what the war had started. The serpent, a long-standing emblem of treachery and poison, lets the message land without showing a single political figure.
