Its German title, *Die Gefahr des Bolschewismus* ("The Danger of Bolshevism"), and its catalog subjects point to a skeletal, death-themed image aimed at fear rather than argument. Printed in 1919, it belongs to a year of turmoil in Germany, when the defeat of 1918 had brought revolution, the Spartacist uprising in Berlin, and the hard birth of the Weimar Republic. Many on the political right and center saw the Bolshevik revolution in Russia as a model that could spread westward, and posters like this one gave that anxiety a vivid, frightening form. The record does not name the artist, so the image is best read as a sign of how deeply postwar Germany was divided.
