Its title, *Die Heimat ist in Gefahr!* ("The Homeland Is in Danger!"), and its skull and death imagery make the poster's message blunt. It appeared in 1919, when Germany was reeling from its 1918 defeat and the collapse of the empire. Communist uprisings, including the Spartacist revolt in Berlin that January and the Bavarian Soviet Republic that spring, led many on the right to cast the left as a threat to the nation. Posters like this one, from the Rehse collection of German political material, show how anticommunist and nationalist appeals reached the street in that unsettled period.
