Bolschewismus bringt Krieg, Arbeitslosigkeit und Hungersnot" ("Bolshevism brings war, unemployment and famine") states its argument in the title itself, written in German for a German audience. Printed in 1918, it reflects the moment when the Bolshevik government in Russia had just signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany, and when Germany was itself nearing revolution and defeat. Propaganda of this kind linked the Bolsheviks to economic collapse and hunger, using the fears of a population exhausted by four years of war. Its message is worth reading alongside the political debates that shaped Germany in its last year of fighting.
