Titled *Elend und Untergang folgen der Anarchie*, or "Misery and ruin follow anarchy," this 1918 color lithograph was also issued as *Bolshevism brings war, unemployment and famine*, a retitling that shows how easily the message could be redirected. It appeared as Germany was losing the war and its monarchy was collapsing, when many conservatives feared that Russian-style revolution would spread west. Engelhard's poster belongs to a wave of anti-communist graphics that tied the hardships of the war's end, including hunger and joblessness, to the threat of radical upheaval. The Rehse-Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a former owner, preserved it as a record of that propaganda.
