This view records a war exhibition in Berlin, organized under the Red Cross, that displayed captured military materiel, including cannons and biplanes. During the First World War, German cities hosted many such displays of seized enemy weapons and equipment. They were meant to show the public the results of the fighting and to encourage support for the war effort, and the charitable organizations that ran them often used them to raise funds. Photographs like this one, with the guns and aircraft set out before the crowd, reveal how the war was presented to civilians at home.
