The Kuppelsaal, the domed hall where the 1936 fencing bouts were held, gives this view its distinctive setting, with its high ceiling and tiers of spectators. Berlin hosted those Summer Games under the Nazi government, which used the event to project national strength and organizing skill to the world. Fencers from many nations competed in the hall, including German-Jewish athlete Helene Mayer, who won silver in the women's foil for Germany. The photograph captures a sporting event that drew close attention both at home and abroad.
