Kayak paddlers are the focus of this 1936 print, which the record titles "Rally for Kayak Paddlers" at the Berlin Olympics. Canoe and kayak racing took place at Grünau, a lake course on the southeastern edge of Berlin that was prepared for the Games. Because the image is a halftone, it was likely made for mass reproduction in a newspaper or magazine, a common way that event photographs reached readers in the 1930s. The Berlin Games were staged by Nazi Germany, which used them to present a carefully ordered image of the country to international visitors and audiences.
