The Olympic Bell is the object at the center of this picture, and it belonged to the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, held at the newly built Olympic Stadium. The bell was cast for those Games and rung during the ceremonies, a showpiece of the Nazi government's effort to present Germany to the world as a modern, orderly host. Berlin's 1936 Olympics drew athletes and spectators from around the globe and are remembered now for the propaganda that surrounded them, as well as for Jesse Owens's four gold medals in track and field.
