Here an Italian minister and a German lieutenant general review troops in Berlin, a scene that shows the Axis partnership on display in October 1940. The picture came from Orbis-Photo, a Berlin news photo service, and its caption card is only partly verified, so the names should be checked against other sources. Two weeks earlier, Germany, Italy and Japan had signed the Tripartite Pact in Berlin, and visits like this one helped show that the alliance was working. Such reviews were often staged for the press, so the formal lines of soldiers say as much about propaganda as about the day's events.
