Carinhall, the hunting estate Hermann Göring built north of Berlin and named for his first wife, Carin, provides the setting for this 1936 group portrait with Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden and Princess Sybilla. Göring was then rising in the Nazi government as Prussian minister and head of the new Luftwaffe, and he used the estate to host foreign guests, so the visit carried diplomatic weight beyond its social surface. The photograph captures a moment when Sweden, which maintained neutrality, still engaged openly with the Third Reich. Viewed today, the image is a useful record of how prominent visitors were received at Carinhall before the war.
