Few houses in Dar es Salaam carried more official weight than the governor's residence shown here, the home of the men who administered German East Africa from this port city. The town had been founded by the Sultan of Zanzibar in the 1860s and became the German colonial capital in 1891, so the building reflects a European administration set down over an older coastal settlement. The print was made by C. Vincenti, a local photographer, and it belonged to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, gathered by the couple during their travels. The record gives its date as either 1901 or 1907.
