The record gives the place as "Maryloa[...?]" in Zululand, a name the cataloguers themselves could not confirm, so the exact location remains uncertain. Zululand covers the northern part of what is now KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, a region long central to Zulu political and cultural life and later shaped by British colonial rule. Photographs captioned "temple" from this period often described religious or ceremonial structures in terms borrowed from outside traditions, so the label tells us as much about how the picture was framed as about the building. The record dates the print only to a span between 1900 and 1970.
