Two policemen stand full length before the camera in Cape Town, and both are barefoot, a detail that sets this view apart from more typical formal portraits of uniformed officers. The print is dated only to a span between 1890 and 1923, and its caption card does not explain why the men went without shoes. It belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled around the travel writer Frank G. Carpenter, whose photographs were meant to show readers how people lived in distant countries. Founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1652, Cape Town was a busy port city in this period, and images like this one document its everyday public life.
