Unlike the street and cathedral scenes Currier issued of Mexico, this lithograph focuses on La Alameda, the shaded public park in Mexico City, with its fountains and rows of trees. The Alameda was laid out as a public promenade in the late sixteenth century, and by the 1840s it was the city's main place for strolling and social display. Published in New York in 1848, the year the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war between the United States and Mexico, the print reflects strong American curiosity about Mexico at that moment. The hand coloring gives the trees and fountains a warmth that plain black-and-white prints lacked.
