Few resorts in the Arizona Territory were built around water as deliberately as the San Marcos Water Gardens, and this view shows one of the grounds laid out for Alexander J. Chandler, a veterinarian turned land developer whose name later became the town of Chandler. The record places the picture around 1910, when Chandler was promoting artesian wells and irrigated farmland south of Phoenix as a healthful retreat for visitors from colder regions. Water gardens of this kind, with pools, shade trees and walks, were meant to make the desert feel lush and inviting.
