Water carriers filling their jars from the Nile is the particular scene here, a daily task that had changed little along the river for centuries. The stereograph, a paired-image card meant to be viewed through a hand viewer for a three-dimensional effect, was issued by the Keystone View Company, a major American publisher of stereo cards that sold armchair travel views of distant places to home audiences in the early twentieth century. Its caption tracings point to geography and irrigation, a reminder that the river's water was the basis of Egyptian farming and village life. Viewers today can see how such cards presented the Nile as both a working waterway and a picturesque subject.
