Port Said sits at the northern mouth of the Suez Canal, where Mediterranean ships first reached Egypt, and this stereograph captures its waterfront in the late 1890s. The canal opened in 1869 after construction led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, and Port Said, founded for the project, became a busy coaling and supply stop for steamers bound to Asia. Littleton, New Hampshire, publisher B.W. Kilburn issued the card for home stereoscope viewers, so the scene reached American parlors as a glimpse of distant trade. Viewed through a stereoscope, its two images would have added depth to the docks.
