Few places on a 1900s stereograph carried as much weight as the Suez Canal, the waterway that opened in 1869 and linked the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. This card, issued by the Universal Photo Art Co. of Philadelphia around 1904, shows the canal as American viewers of the period would have known it: a distant route to Asia and Africa, shaped by British and French commercial interests and cut through the Egyptian desert. Stereo cards like this were meant for a parlor stereoscope, where two slightly offset views fused into a single image with depth. Their wide popularity in the early twentieth century made them one of the main ways ordinary households saw the world beyond home.
