The stereograph shows the Suez Canal at Port Said, the northern terminus where the waterway opens onto the Mediterranean, and it was issued as one of a series of stereo cards sold for home viewing in the 1890s. Cards like this were viewed through a hand stereoscope, so the two slightly offset images merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Port Said was built in the late 1850s to serve the canal's construction, and by the 1890s it had grown into a busy coaling and transit port where ships waited to enter the canal. The card's publisher, Strohmeyer & Wyman of New York, sold such views to American households eager to see distant places.
