Set in the bread market of Kraków, the former royal capital of Poland, this view is dated to about May 1917, when the city lay under Austria-Hungary. Polish kings ruled from Kraków for centuries before the court moved to Warsaw in the late 1500s, and during the First World War its market squares were places where food supply mattered every day. Issued by the Keystone View Company as a stereograph, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The caption data is old and unverified, so the exact date remains uncertain.
