Am Hof is one of the older open squares in central Vienna, and this view centers on the equestrian statue of Archduke Charles, the Habsburg general who was cast by Anton Dominik Fernkorn and set on the square in 1860. The square had long served as a place for trade, and the open-air stalls crowding the foreground show that commercial life continuing around the monument. The picture was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed photographs in color from multiple stone plates, which was popular for travel views in the 1890s. The vivid color gives a sense of the square's everyday bustle at the end of the century.
