Teocallis, the stepped temple-pyramids of Mesoamerica, are the subject here, shown at Chichen Itza, the Maya city on the Yucatan Peninsula. The record gives no date, but aquatint was a popular method for travel views in the nineteenth century, when European and American readers were first encountering Maya ruins in print. Explorers John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood visited the site in 1841 and published their work widely, helping shape how these temples looked to people far away. The print's tonal contrast and simplified outlines convey the scale of the stone structures.
