This woodcut shows Montezuma II, the Mexica (Aztec) ruler whose capital, Tenochtitlan, stood on the site of present-day Mexico City. He governed in the years just before Hernán Cortés and his forces reached the city in 1519, and Montezuma died in Spanish custody in 1520. The print carries no date or maker on its record, and its dates are unverified, so it likely reflects European imagination more than a true likeness. Printed portraits like this one circulated in Europe during the 16th century, when readers were eager for images of the distant empire and its conquest.
