The adobe church at Los Ranchos de Taos, dedicated to San Francisco de Asís, is one of New Mexico's best-known Spanish colonial mission buildings, and Laura Gilpin's view shows its thick walls and heavy sloping buttresses that give the facade a sculpted outline. Gilpin, a photographer who spent much of her career documenting the Southwest, made this print around 1939, when interest in the region's historic architecture was growing. The date comes from an unverified caption card, so it is worth checking against other records when comparing this view with the church as it appears today.
