Crowded along the waterfront of Hong Kong, this view centers on the wharf and the peddlers who worked its edge, the kind of street trade that kept goods moving between ships and shore. The Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress holds a large body of photographs from the early twentieth century, when Carpenter travelled widely and recorded daily life in ports and cities across Asia. Hong Kong was then one of the busiest harbors in the world, a British colony where Chinese merchants, laborers and small traders worked side by side with shipping companies. The record dates the picture only to the years between 1890 and 1923, but its subject reflects the trade that defined the harbor in that span.
