Smoke rises from the oil tanks at Meggs Wharf, a waterfront site in San Francisco that the caption card links to the city's fires and earthquakes. The record dates the picture to about 1906, which fits the aftermath of the April 1906 earthquake, when broken gas and oil lines fed fires that burned across the city for several days. Pillsbury Picture Co. issued the view as a commercial photograph, so it reflects how the disaster was packaged and sold to a national audience. The date and details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
