Newspaper publisher Edward Beale McLean appears in this March 1924 photograph before a Senate committee probing the leasing of naval oil reserves. McLean owned the Washington Post and was a friend of Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall, whose 1921 handling of the Teapot Dome reserve in Wyoming became the center of the scandal. The Navy had set aside those reserves to fuel its ships as they shifted from coal to oil, so the hearings drew wide public attention. The caption details for this print come from an older card and have not been independently checked.
