Three separate views of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, share this sheet, with the grounds set beside the Severn River. The Academy opened in 1845 under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, who founded it at Fort Severn to give future officers a structured schooling in place of the older practice of learning largely at sea. The waterfront setting tied the school to the navy it trained, and the three views let the viewer compare different parts of the campus.
