Two men work at a bench inside the Naval Gun Factory in Washington, D.C., one of the shops where the Navy built and repaired its heavy ordnance. The factory had been established at the Washington Navy Yard in the late 1880s, and by 1903 it was a major federal industrial site in the capital. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer known for documenting government institutions and working life, made the picture as a cyanotype, a blueprint-style process that gives the print its blue tone. The caption details come from unverified old records, so the exact task at the bench is best read from the scene itself.
