Seven men stand inside an old working shaft, each holding a lamp, in a view that puts the dim interior and the miners' gear at the center. The record dates the picture to about 1906 and credits C.W.J. Harris with its copyright, though the coal-mine identification is marked as unverified. Around the turn of the century, American coal operations relied on open-flame oil and carbide lamps, which made cap lamps and light a daily concern for underground crews. Photographs like this one were often made to document working conditions, company operations or the people who worked them.
