Two men are shown handling a safety lamp, a flame-shielded light that let underground workers see in gas-laden tunnels without setting off an explosion. The title places the scene in a coal mine, but that detail comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. Davy lamps, devised by Humphry Davy in 1815, contained the flame behind a wire gauze, and by the early 1900s they were standard equipment in many mines. The print is dated around 1906, and its caption card credits C.W.J. Harris with the copyright.
