The photograph shows the portal and surroundings of the Revenue Tunnel, a drainage and haulage tunnel serving mines in the Sneffels district near Ouray, Colorado, in the San Juan Mountains. Tunnels like this were driven into steep mountainside rock so that ore could be moved out by rail or wagon and water could drain from the workings below. Mining in this area drew heavy investment and hard labor around 1900, and the buildings and rough ground at the entrance reflect how much of the work depended on such costly underground routes. The record's date of about 1901 is approximate, and the caption card information has not been verified.
