Its title carries a question mark, asking whether the miner beneath the fallen rock is dead, and the picture itself does not settle the matter. The man lies half-buried in a coal tunnel, his body set against the broken stone that trapped him. The print belongs to the National Photo Company collection, the commercial studio whose early twentieth-century work recorded American industry and public life, and it is catalogued under mine disasters. Roof falls and cave-ins were among the most frequent causes of death underground, and pictures like this one helped show the dangers coal miners faced.
