A close study of rock and living growth, this 1968 print turns an Ontario outcrop into a lesson in texture and contrast. Oscar Bailey's name appears on the back of the mount, but the date comes from an older catalog card that has not been independently verified, so the exact location and circumstances remain uncertain. Much of Ontario sits on the rugged Canadian Shield, where glaciers exposed bare granite that thin soil and hardy plants later colonized, a meeting of stone and growth that has long drawn photographers. Look at how the rock's tonal range plays against the plant's softer edges.
