Emily Rabbat works a horizontal milling machine, cutting parts for airplane engines at a Wright Aeronautical Corporation plant in Paterson, New Jersey. The record notes that she had previously worked in a silk mill, a common path for Paterson women, since the city had long been known as "Silk City" and its textile trade employed many of its residents. As men left for military service, wartime demand drew workers like her into aircraft factories, and this print belongs to a Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection that documented home-front labor. The date is given only as approximately 1942, so the exact moment is uncertain.
