Orville Wright is shown with Lieutenant Lahm of the Signal Corps after a record flight at Fort Myer, Virginia, on July 27, 1909, when the aircraft covered fifty miles at about forty miles an hour. The Army had bought a Wright machine for its aviation work, and Fort Myer became the proving ground for the first military airplane. The subject list also notes automobiles and crowds, a reminder that spectators and vehicles gathered at the parade ground to watch these early demonstrations, which drew wide public attention.
