A man stands beside an airplane as a crowd gathers around him, a scene typical of the public attention early aviators drew. The record tentatively identifies him as Louis Blériot, the French pilot who became famous in July 1909 for flying across the English Channel, though the question mark in the title means the identification is not certain. Dated October 15, 1909, the picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs that documents much of the early twentieth century's public life. Crowds like this one show how quickly flight moved from novelty to spectacle in those years.
