A German airplane sits ready for takeoff on a naval airfield in Flanders, the coastal region of Belgium that became a front line in the First World War. By 1917, German naval aviators were using bases along this coast to scout the North Sea and the English Channel and to strike at shipping and coastal targets. The print comes from the collection of Oskar Ursinus, a German aviation writer and enthusiast, and its caption information was compiled from an old card and later revisions, so some details may be uncertain. Still, the image offers a clear view of the aircraft and the flat, open ground that such airfields required.
