Two men stand beside an airplane in this print, but the caption card does not name them, so their roles remain open. The picture belongs to the papers of Ira Clarence Eaker, who learned to fly in the Army during World War I and later commanded the Eighth Air Force's bombers over Europe in 1942 and 1943. Official photographs of officers posed with aircraft were common in military files of the period, and they document the people who built American military aviation. Because the date range spans three decades, the print could come from almost any stage of that career.
