Red Mountain City, a mining camp high in Colorado's San Juan Mountains near Ouray, takes its name from the red-stained slopes above it, and this view of the Walsh mine places the operation within that rugged district. The area drew prospectors during the silver and gold booms of the 1880s and 1890s, when steep terrain and harsh winters made every shaft and road expensive to build and keep open. The print comes from the Evalyn Walsh McLean Collection, and its caption card, whose details are unverified, files it under geography and mines. The picture is worth studying for how it shows a working landscape, not just a single building.
