Taken from the northwest, this photograph shows the American Beet Sugar Company factory in Rocky Ford, a town in the irrigated Arkansas River valley of southeastern Colorado. The c1902 date places it in the early years of the sugar beet industry in the American West, when irrigated farms around Rocky Ford supplied beets to processing plants that turned them into refined sugar. The caption card, whose data is unverified, links the building to the beet crop, a reminder of how closely a single factory depended on the surrounding fields. Views like this one document the industrial buildings that anchored farm communities of the period.
