The factory pictured here belonged to the Howe Machine Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, a firm that traded on the name of Elias Howe, who had patented a practical lockstitch sewing machine in 1846. Bridgeport grew into one of the country's leading sewing machine centers in the later 19th century, and factories like this one supplied the home and garment trades that were transforming how clothing was made. The record gives no date for the print, and its shelflist card names a second firm, Hatch & Co., that has not been verified. The view is still useful for seeing how a manufacturing works of that era was laid out.
