Few places in New England were as closely tied to shoemaking as Massachusetts, and this print shows one such works in Plymouth, a town better known for its Pilgrim history. It was made for the firm of Frederick Jones & Co., and the shelflist card links it to the Bufford name, probably the Boston lithographers, though that attribution is unverified. The card gives no date, so the print is best read against its general period: by the later 1800s, mechanized shoe production had drawn workers into large factory buildings, and firms often commissioned views like this to show off their size and modern methods.
