Beykoz, on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, was known for its tanneries, and this view shows an old tannery building now given over to an ironworks and a vinegar factory, a change the caption describes as recent. Tanning depended on water and tannins from bark, which helps explain why the district drew leather works for so long. The print belongs to an album of police stations and public buildings in Istanbul and its surroundings, part of the collection associated with Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909. Its captions in Ottoman Turkish and French suggest the album was meant to record the empire's modern works.
