Seen from the water, this view shows the Imperial Tophane factory, the Ottoman gun and small arms works on the Istanbul waterfront at Tophane, where cannons and rifles were made for the state. The Abdullah Frères studio, a firm of photographers working in Istanbul, took views like this for the Ottoman court, and the print comes from an album assembled for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, whose reign from 1876 to 1909 put heavy emphasis on modernizing the army and its industry. The caption is written in both Ottoman Turkish and French, a sign that it was meant for an international audience as well as domestic officials.
