The subject here is the deck cabins of the Imperial Yacht *Sultaniye*, shown on the Bosphorus at Constantinople, now Istanbul. The photograph is one of the Abdullah Frères studio's views, a firm of court photographers whose work was widely sold in the late 19th century. Its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, and it sits within an album of naval images that belonged to Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909. Such views record the furnishings and layout of a royal vessel at a time when the Ottoman navy was modernizing, and the cabins' interiors offer a rare look at how the imperial household lived at sea.
