The gun and engine stores of the Imperial Naval Arsenal in Constantinople appear here, with the arsenal's working interior laid out in the frame. Abdullah Frères, the studio of Ottoman court photographers, made the print sometime between 1880 and 1893, a period when the empire was modernizing its fleet and depended on the Golden Horn shipyards for guns, machinery and repairs. Albumen prints like this one were made from glass negatives and mounted in albums, and the caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, which suggests it was meant for viewers beyond the palace. It belongs to the album of Abdul-Hamid II, which documents the arsenal alongside the naval academy and the navy department.
